Happy Sunday,

So far, 2026 has been a year of entering and making the best of opportunistic trades, just like this one in DKS.

DKS tends to be quite volatile which is great for higher premiums, but it also means I want to try and take profits and close the position, as you'll see in the trade report.

This week:

  1. $125 profit in Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS)

$125 profit in DKS

I prefer not to hold trades through earnings, so every earnings season there's a bit of a quiet period where I won't enter some stocks because of earnings, so I'm always on the lookout for opportunities in stocks that can be placed before earnings, and this trade in DKS appeared.

I sold an Aug 21 $185 cash-secured put for $250 credit. As long as I could manage the position by the time this trade expired, I would not cross over to earnings.

As mentioned at the top, DKS can be a little volatile, and so coupled with the prospect of upcoming earnings, I decided to be disciplined and take this trade off at 50% instead of letting it run.

2 weeks later I paid $125 to close the position, resulting in $125 realized profit (exactly 50% of max profit).

This was also win #2 for the ongoing July course. One change I made in 2026 was to commit to at least 5 winning trades during the duration of the course.

This is because there are sometimes quiet periods in the market, and I don't want someone to be disadvantaged just because they happened to take the course during one of those periods.

DKS is a stock that pops in and out of the portfolio with 5 wins from 5 trades in 2026 and a running profit total of $1,053.

This number was 9 wins from 9 wins in 2025 and a total profit of $1,749.

This trade (and all trades in this newsletter) are shared in close-to real time to my private community as updates in my own portfolio (not recommendations). If you're familiar with the basic mechanics of options, you can consider joining the private community to view these updates as well.

And of course the guidance for managing and closing both trades were posted to the community as well.

Have a good weekend!
